Description

Read the article then answer both questions below.

The article written by Hashemzadeh et al. (2019) illustrates the effectiveness of TTM in improving lifestyle with changing behavior patterns in the industrialized society (2019). The article adopts the literature review method to answer three questions: “Which studies have used different aspects of TTM? Why have studies used TTM to improve health behaviors in CDs? What are the pros and cons of TTM in the studies?” (2019). The article research filters numerous articles and selects 103 articles (2019). Those articles provide positive confirmation to the stages of change (SC), the process of change (PC), decisional balance (DB), and self‑efficiency (SE). However, a few articles have mentioned chronic diseases(CDs). Those relevant articles provide positive results to the treatment of TTM. From the literature review method, the authors conclude that TTM would benefit the cure of several disasters, such as obesity. The logic of this article is very clear, it introduces six stages of TTM and mentions that different people may go through the six stages to achieve success. However, people also can have the possibility of getting stuck among the five stages. The PC, DB, and SE are the three main factors in deciding the movement among different stages–SC. The articles regarding CDs could provide that optimistic result with the TTM model. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) model is from health communication and is used in broader applications.

  1. There are generally six stages in the TTM. They are Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance, and Termination. Instead of a one-way linear processing way, the six stages could form a cycle. The whole process reflects people’s recognition, evaluation, and changes.
  2. However, people may not go through all those six stages. If people adopt inappropriate actions, they would get stuck at a particular stage or return to the previous stages. From the realistic example, if people want to lose weight, people would enter into the stages of precontemplation and action. But the maintenance would be a challenge for most participants (2019).
  3. Also, the vegetarian is a vivid example. People who pursue eating healthily would like to become vegetarians. When they realize their current eating behaviors are unhealthy, they will enter the Contemplation stage. People may prepare their menu for the next 30 or 60 days to transform into vegetarians, and then they would take actions. After that, it is critical to maintain their behavior—to eat a vegan diet and become the real vegetarians. However, most people may give up at the “action” or “maintenance” stage. Even worse, if the menu is too strict, they would give up directly at the preparation stage.
  4. Therefore, instead of understanding the TTM, how to properly use the TTM in our daily lives should be critical. This fact may also be the reason why there are a few articles discussing the CDs regarding TTM.

Discussion Questions

  1. To be honest, it is hard to identify a behavior as bad or good for human behaviors. Therefore, whether we could think they are staying at the precontemplation stage since we don’t recognize the behavior? Furthermore, when people enter the Contemplation stage, how should we define whether the thinking or action is proper? For example, if my friend was malnutrition and was lack of protein, she still wanted to become a vegetarian. If she takes the TTM model, I think the method may not help her but may push her into a worse situation.
  2. (Ignore the first question and take this question into a new situation) If my friend uses TTM properly and aims at a healthy and better life, she may give up at the maintenance stage. The realistic question would be: how to improve the success rate of TTM? You can share any thoughts.
