Vanessa, Discuss one benefit, according to the literature, of web-based patient education portals?       One benefit of patient education portals, as discussed within the literature, states that “by serving as a single comprehensive record, an ideal PHR could facilitate improved care coordination between healthcare providers, reduce repetitive tests and conflicting therapies, and improve patient safety” (Realizeit, n.d.). The improved communication between patient and provider, as well as inter-professionally between specialists within the healthcare system can create a much more efficient process for all involved.  Discuss one challenge of web-based patient education portals?      One challenge of patient education portals as discussed within the literature was usability for the patient. The literature states, “Older adults with lower eHealth literacy were found to have significant difficulty in using a PHR to complete commons health management tasks” (Realizeit, n.d.). This is a challenge to overcome, as a patient health record should be easily accessible and functional for all patients. How do you think nurses should deal with patients who present with web-based health information which may impact their care?      Nurses should always provide in-depth patient education regarding the patients specific condition so that they have the knowledge unique to their situation. A nurse should also make the client aware that certain online resources are not credible and cannot provide information specific to them, and to always reach out to their provider. What information should nurses provide to patients regarding the use of valid internet sources for healthcare information.      Nurses should teach patients that there are certain credible, scholarly sources which can provide beneficial information regarding certain aspects of health. However, none of these resources can provide patient specific advice and that consulting their provider should always be the first option.

Christine, Benefit of Web-based Patient Portals There are many benefits for patients and providers who utilize web-based patient portals for care. An example of one benefit is the ability of providers to stay in constant communication with patients who may suffer from chronic illnesses (Digital Health, n.d.). Patients who have chronic illnesses are more likely to request frequent follow-up appointments. This can be time-consuming, and providers may not have the schedule availability to accommodate frequent appointments. Web-based portals allow patients and providers to communicate more frequently through messaging systems. One Challenge of Web-based Patient Portals Though web-based patient portals have many benefits, challenges are also present. Privacy and data protection concerns are serious challenges that pose threat to web-based portals (Digital Health, n.d.). These portals are typically available via mobile apps which risks patient information being hacked. Also, individuals may obtain access to patient portals without permission and violate HIPPA laws. Nursing Education for Web-based Health Information Patients have more access to healthcare journals and websites now than ever. Often, when patients are feeling unique symptoms, they turn to the internet to research the potential diagnosis’ prior to being seen by professional providers. For patients who routinely rely on the internet to self-diagnose, nurses can provide education about acceptable medical websites. Nursing education about effective and appropriate engagement with web-based healthcare content can “influence behavioral change to enable people to make better healthcare choices” (Oktay et al., 2021). Patients will improve their health literacy and become more knowledgeable and involved in their care treatment. Information About Valid Internet Sources for Healthcare Information As mentioned earlier, valid internet sources for healthcare information can promote patient engagement with the providers about treatment. Nurses can educate patients on basic education regarding the validity of sources by providing several self-reflecting questions for the website. Questions to ask yourself about the validity of a health article include “When was the information written and updated?”, “Does the website offer quick and easy solutions to your health problems?”, “Does it promise miracle cures?”, and “What is the purpose of the website, and who owns or sponsors it?” (National Institute on Aging, n.d.). The ability to answer these questions about a website can indicate whether it promotes evidence-based practices and research.
