Watch The Volunteer movie clips. In the movie clips, what were the source of conflict between Tom Tuttle, a Peace Corps volunteer, and the Thai village people? Explain this conflict based on the chapter 2 content (i.e., Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck’s value orientation, Hofstede’s cultural dimension, etc.). In contrast, Tom Hanks exhibited a different approach to communicate effectively. Discuss what you could learn from his approach to be a successful intercultural communicator.
In the Module 2 section of the content area of D2L, there are three scales measuring personal value dimensions (Hofestede’s), individualism vs collectivism (Hofstede’s) and personal value orientation (Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck’s). Take the three scales and then share your results with your classmates. In your post, discuss the profile of your cultural orientation. Do you agree with these results or not? Is your cultural trait consistent with typical national culture of your country?
